For drug rehabilitation or alcohol treatment, research studies show that a personalized program of regular physical activity often helps in the reduction of stress, a key goal in the addiction recovery process.

Furthermore, in terms of the treatment of co-occurring conditions such as depression, which can be barriers to treatment and recovery, physical activity is known to reduce cravings by changing the brain chemistry. With this in mind, here at Caron Texas, the drug and alcohol treatment programs stress the need for physical activity as an integral part of substance abuse treatment and recovery and in aftercare.

The experienced and professional wellness staff at Caron Texas includes a personal trainer who helps patients find the type of physical activities and the level of exercise that each patient finds most comfortable. The facility has a gymnasium for organized recreation like volleyball and basketball, as well as group and individual sessions for yoga, Zumba music workouts, and tai-chi. Caron Texas also has a workout area for both weight training and aerobic exercise, together with experienced instruction to help patients maximize return with a minimum of discomfort. Finally, the facility has an outdoor pool for water aerobics and other exercises for those patients desiring non-weight bearing exercise or water resistance workouts.

Research indicates that there are three things that work for depression: medication, cognitive behavioral therapy and exercise. While Caron Texas teaches cognitive behavioral therapy and offers medication for those who need it as part of their individual treatment, for many patients it is also very helpful to incorporate an exercise program that can be sustained over the long-term as an integral part of their individual road to recovery.
