Grief Counseling
Many addiction patients come for treatment at Caron Texas having issues other than their substance use, any of which can block their recovery. Grief can be one of those issues. When patients stop the alcohol or drug use, emotions and feelings that have long been buried begin to rise to the surface. There can be losses they experienced early in life, losses because of their chemical use and also the loss of the love of their life: their drug of choice. They ask, "Is my life worth living without my drug?" or "Am I still a valuable person without the thing that was such a big part of my life? How can I make this up?"
In many cases, patients are not only grieving the loss of their addiction, they also may not have started grieving other losses like death or estrangement of family members, jobs, transitions, and the loss of dreams because of the substance use that covered the grief feelings.
Caron Texas offers educational lectures on grief, as well as weekly grief groups where people are able to start to identify some of these losses and share with others their impact.
