Addiction and substance abuse is a complex disorder which is characterized by compulsive drug or alcohol use. Addicted people experience an overwhelming and uncontrollable need for drugs or alcohol even if it means loss of work and relationships. Repeated drug use forms a chemical dependency and causes long lasting changes to the way the brain functions and operates. These changes interfere with a person’s ability to think clearly, exercise good judgment, control your behavior and feel normal without drugs.

While each drug produces different effects, all abused substances share one thing in common. They hijack the brain’s normal “reward” pathways and alter the areas of the brain responsible for self – control, judgment, emotional regulation, motivation, memory and learning. All abused substances, including alcohol, heroin, Xanax, speed, or nicotine, Vicodin act on different pathways in the brain but result in the same uncontrollable need to obtain more of the substance, which, in turn, creates a significant disruption in daily living.
