12-Step Program

The Caron Texas addiction treatment programs are based on the 12-Step drug and alcohol addiction philosophy. The 12-Step program was originally developed in 1935 by Bill Wilson and Dr. Bob Smith for Alcoholics Anonymous. While the 12-Step program has evolved over the years, the core belief that addiction is a disease and that recovery is achievable has not changed.

The 12-Step program is a set of guiding principles outlining a course of action for recovery from addiction, compulsion, or other behavioral problems. The 12-Step program focuses on a fully inclusive physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual recovery. Some of the key 12-Step principles include :

  • Admitting that one cannot control one's addiction or compulsion
  • Recognizing a Higher Power that can give strength
  • Examining past errors with the help of a sponsor (experienced member)
  • Making amends for these errors
  • Learning to live a new life with a new code of behavior
  • Helping others who suffer from the same addictions or compulsions.

The Caron Texas treatment program teaches patients to use the 12-Step principles to make emotional and behavioral adjustments to recover from the disease of addiction. In addition, the Caron Texas staff provides evidence-based counseling and educational group sessions to discuss the 12-Step principles. Patients of Caron Texas are provided the skills, the environment, and the guidance to make the necessary changes that will support their long-term addiction recovery.
